Need help with Dimmer install...

Greetings,

I'd like to replace a 3-way switch ( it controls the main floor hall lighting & is tied into the upstairs hall lighting ) with a dimmer switch. Do I need a special style dimmer to accomodate a 3-wire connection? Would I need to install a dimmer in the upstairs switch as well?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Dan

You need to get a three-way dimmer, sometimes called a multi-location dimmer. You'll need to replace both switches with compatible multi-location units. When you pick out a dimmer, check the manufacturer's literature for information about what switches are compatible. Some will work with just a regular three-way toggle switch on the other end, but some require remote dimmers like the Lutron Maestro line.
