1/3 hp 120v: starts sometimes and more

Bought this at a yard sale and probably overpaid: I reversed the direction, no problem. Motor starts, sometimes, sometimes not - just hums, AND sometime in the WRONG direction. When it does not start I can turn the shaft to start it. BUT I can get it to run in either direction???

Someone tell me there is an easy solution!

Replacement of the start capacitor would probably fix it up. Go to a motor shop and get a capacitor that is of equal or higher voltage rating and equal or higher capacitance but not more than about 15% higher. Of course a good cleaning and lube of the bearings can't hurt either.

Thanks, but. . .

I had motor apart. Did not see capacitor. Did see a centrifugal switch (I think that's it) which was sticking a little. Cleaned as best I could - much better, but still probs.

Any other possibilities?

Went back into the motor and found a wire not connected to antything. Made a good guess to where it was supposed to go, re-attached the wire and the motor works!
