water heater code

Hi..can can anyone help describe to me the nec code for wiring a 220 hot water heater in my new home? I have read a little about this and seem to think that I need a disconnect?? Any help will be thankful...

You need a disconnect for the water heater...unless the breaker panel is within sight of the water heater.

Within sight meaning a person working on the water heater should be able to clearly see the breaker panel

ok that sounds good..you could see the water heater from the breaker panel if the laundry door was open..lol...where should the disconnect be located? I have a 2005 nec code book.do you remember what section it is in? Thank you...

it is in 422.30 and 422.31(B)

You can either install a 2pole 30 amp rated toggles switch or one of those 30 amp gray box disconnects like you would see on an a/c unit etc.

I would put it next to water heater and intercept the flex coming out of wall etc.
