Kitchen Appliance Upgrades

We have just purchased a home that was built in the early 50's. Some of the appliances have never been replaced since the home was built and all the rest of them are at least 20 or more years old. I am trying to decide if it is worth the time and money to install a 100 amp sub panel under the kitchen. The first two appliances to be replaced are the frig and the wall oven. The frig is not a big deal. The wall oven is going to be replaced w/ a double oven that is rated for a 30 amp circuit. The current wall oven circuit is a 40' run of 8/3 romex on a 30 amp breaker. The cook top which is not going to be replaced at this time has the same setup as the wall oven. Sometime in the future also we want to replace the exhaust hood over the cook top with a microwave w/ exhaust combo unit. I also don't know how the circuits for the dishwasher and the garbage disposal are run. I can only hope that they have there own circuits. So is there anything else that I should be considering. Right now the only reason for me to install a sub panel would be out of convenience for future upgrades not out of necessity. Thanks...

Bsed on your description it seems like the subpanel is unnecessary.

You will need to run a dedicated circuit for the new microwave/hood.

You may want to consider upgrading to 4 wire circuits for the range and oven. If they are not being moved the older installation would be grandfathered. If they need to be moved due to layout changes new wiring should be run.

You should also consider upgrading the countertop circuits to todays standards. Code today calls for a minimum of 2 20-amp circuits to serve only the kitchen/dining receptacles. Spacing for receptacles has also changed from when you house was built. Today any countertop 12 inches or wider would have a receptacle and no space should be more than 2 foot from a receptacle. Spaces behind the cooktop and sink do not count, but would need to have a receptacle within 2 foot of each side.

The countertop receptacles will also require GFI protection.

We are not changing the location of any appliances. I am going to make the opening for the new oven larger. I have not taken the old oven out yet and I would almost put money on the fact that there is no junction box. If there is no junction box or if there is one and if I need to move it for some reason. would there be a problem with putting a junction box in the basement and run conduit to the new oven junction box?

You are right about the outlets almost every outlet in the whole house is a two prong outlet.

At some point you should verify the 3 prongs are grounded and it isn't a bootleg ground.

I was able to pull out the old oven. There was a junction box it was just laying lose behind the oven but at least they put in junction box.

When I disconnected the oven I realized that it was only 10 ga wire. So I went down to the basement to see what was going on because I know that the line coming out of the main panel was 8/3 romex. I found a junction box under the kitchen w/ the 8/3 going in and two 10/3 lines coming out 1 line going to the oven and the other going to the cook top.

I know 10 ga is the min for a 30 amp circuit. Do you think I am still ok with this set up?

Also the 10/3 is 10/3 w/ ground wire to my surprise.
