Replace wall mounted porch lights, but no junction boxes!

I took off the old lantern style light(s) and found there was no junction box and the old 2 wires just emerge out of a hole in the door trim (no ground). What the heck do I do now?

Unless you were to mount the new fixtures on a weatherproof box you will need to add boxes to properly contain the splices.

There are several styles available depending on the material on the exterior of your house.

Here is one style Siding Box Kits

If there is only one cable you may be able to use a pancake box.

It looks like one big wire with 2 wires coming from it and it literally comes out of a hole in the door trim (quite wide trim). The new light says I need a junction box with a ground and that if I find only 2 wires I should call an electrician (not very helpful instructions). I would hate to get out a chisel and attack the wood door trim.
