Replacing one ceiling light with 4 cans and a fan.

I'm trying to replace my ceiling light in the bedroom. What I want to do is put a ceiling fan in that spot and 4 can lights elsewhere in the room. I do have access to the attic for putting in the cans and wiring. I'd like to use the existing wiring and use one switch opening (multi-function switch maybe) to control the fan and the lights separately. Is there a way to use the existing wiring between the light and the switch to power the fan and split off from that in the attic to power the can lights while using one multi-switch?

Yes, but how depends on whether the power comes in at the switch or light and if the cable between the light and switch is 3-conductor+ground or 2-conductor+ground.
