electrical outlet troubleshooting - need help....

3 outlets in one room dont work. others in the room do work. have reset the breaker box. tester shows the 3 outlets getting power - but when we plug something in, it doesnt work. replaced the outlet with one that we know works - still no dice. not sure what else to check..

Non contact testers and digital multimeters may give false readings. What are you testing with?

As Ray pointed out, non contact testers will tell you if you have a hot wire but it will not tell you if there is an open neutral. Use a meter set to at least 125 volts and test from hot to neutral.

Surge Protection

I have an LCD TV that we got earlier this year. I have mounted it on the wall with the power just behind the TV so I am not able to use a good power strip with a surge protector for the power to the TV. My concern is the lightning we have in our area and I want to protect the TV. I'd really like to protect the whole house from surge but that may be down the road a bit. What can I do to protect my TV now? Will a GCFI receptacle act as a surge protector and protect my TV against a surge from a lightning strike? Also, if there are suggestions for protecting the whole house (like putting something in the main breaker panel) I would welcome that info as well. Thanks.

Kitchen circuits question

Hi all, Kitchen remodel coming up in the next year. Mostly DIY stuff. After the success of wiring my entire shop from soup to nuts (permit to full usage :) ), I will try to tackle this myself. My problem is that I get confused on what is a requirement and exceptioned and recommended. There is a dedicated lighting circuit for kitchen/dining Already have two circuits feeding the kitchen outlets. One is GFCI (for sink outlets), the other is not (has the fridge on it, nowhere near the water sources). Dedicated line for the D/W and Disposal. The plan will be for an upgraded vent hood, new fridge, microwave, and beverage center. An island will be in the center (with the beverage fridge and microwave). With the fridge on a dedicated (see below) circuit, I plan to upgrade the other outlets to GFCI. Questions: 1) Can I run both refrigerators off the same circuit? I also read somewhere that a clock and a vent hood can tap off a fridge circuit as well. 2) Does the island need a dedicated circuit, or can I tap off the existing two 20A GFCI circuits? 3) Microwave needs a dedicated circuit. Correct? Thanks for the help.
