240 Volt lighting transformer

Hey guys.

I was installing a Lithonia MH Flood Light fixture today and had a brain freeze.....I'm getting old.

It has a Single phase multi-tap ballast (wound multi-tap transformer)....120/240/277/480V, and seperate wires are pulled out for each of the voltage connections plus a common.

I was working at a residence with the standard 120/240 single phase service, and when I started to hook up the ballast, I had a mental shut down.

I finally hooked it up like this.

I conected one (120V) leg of the incoming (240V single phase branch circuit) to the 240V connection on the ballast.
The other leg (120V) of the incoming 240V branch circuit I connected to the common connection on the ballast.

This should give me 240V across the input winding on the ballast (transformer).

Right or wrong?
Did it smoke when I powered it up?

Not sure since I don't have the connection diagram, but when I see common, I think neutral. Connecting a hot condcutor to the common might have done some damage. I would guess 240 V and 480 V are connected to something other than common and 120 V and 277 V, the neutral is connected to common...just guessing though...

on a lighting ballast the common is normally the hots.


That other phase of 120 was to the common on the resistor correct?

For 240 volt luminaire useage take one lead marked 240 volt to one conductor { black or red } and take the COM { common } to other conductor and ya good to go.

The bare or green conductor will hook up to the green screw or green conductor one of the two at the luminaire.
