But the old fashioned carpenter in me still thinks the house looks "stupid" without a roof overhang. I know just me.

I haven't seen a house built in years that has any overhang on the sides...unless the roof has slope that way (whatever that kind of roof is called). Though thinking about mine here I have overhang front and rear and the roof slopes to left and right. That's more the style of architecture out here though. Personally the exposed 2x4 that supports the roof sheathing on the overhangs is ugly (no soffits here).
