Why is OSB behind drywall?

Hi,

I have discovered that my garage and bathrooms have OSB behind (interior walls) the drywall. It's flush with the wall studs. My home is a tract home built about 12 years ago.

Why do they do this?
It makes stud finding and putting in old work boxes a real pain.

The reason I'm asking is that I have to change a box to an old work style on a wall with the OSB. There appears to be enough length on the screw for the clamp ears to extend far enough but they typically do a really bad job cutting the OSB hole for the box. On the one I'm working on now the OSB edges are cut at a pretty steep angle so the old work box ears are not holding very well. The drywall hole is a mess also like all the box holes in my house.

Any tips on how to deal with this situation if the ears don't catch short of removing drywall?

Is it allowable to use drywall screws to attach a box to a stud from the inside of the box?

Thanks

You could use a gangable box and Madison clips.

Or you can put sctews through the ears of the gangablle box

I'm guessing shear wall for seismic code if you're in California.

You could use "F" clips with a metal box or screw through the box into the stud. Arlington Industries makes a box called "One Box" that can easily be screwed in without damaging the wall.

Madison clips only work with metal boxes with the plaster ears.
