Help on Install of bathroom light

Helping out a dear neighbor and I need to install a new bathroom light. I have the ceiling box open with the light with off ( wall switch ) and while I do not get 120v AC I am getting a 12v leak?? Trying to avoid a big rewire job here. Will it be ok to ignore that 12v leak and put a light on those two wires with wire nuts.

It sounds like phantom voltage. How are you measuring the voltage?

Wiring

Turn the breaker off before attempting to install the light.

It is a false reading caused by the type of meter you are using. You should turn off the breaker or pull the fuse on this circuit as you can still get shocked by just turning the switch off.
