Flourescent Problem

I have a flourescent light fixture which uses 2 - 2 foot bulbs. Both bulbs went out days apart. I replaced both bulbs but only one lights up. I switched the two bulbs to make sure it wasn't the bulbs.

Also, the one that lights, it takes about 10 seconds before it lights. This did not happen before.

Any ideas on what my problem is? Could it be the balast <sp> if one works and the other doesn't?

I would replace the ballast. This should correct your problem. Now you might want to check prices for a whole new replacement compared to the cost of the replacement of your ballast only. Might be cheaper to pitch the old fixture and replace with a new one.

GCFI outlet inop?????

I have a GCFI outlet in a utility room (contains house hot water heater and well tank, etc. that I recently found was not working. I bought a new GCFI outlet and installed it and still nothing. I replaced the new GCFI outlet with a conventional outlet and no change. I bought a digital multimeter and checked for voltage levels. Taking the black lead from the meter to the white wire side and the red lead to black wire side led to no reading. Taking the black lead and placing it in the ground portion of the outlet and the red lead in either the white or black side of the outlet resulted in a 120V reading. This is totally confusing me as this outlet was working before and now is no longer. Any help would be appreciated.Read More

Unused two pole breaker - removal?

This is 'almost' a follow-on to another thread ("'Double' circuit beakers"), but not quite. Hopefully its the end of my relentless questioning, too (I should roam the Computer forum and try to payback there). Basically (if Wg has got tired of this!), my 100A service panel was full (with only 11 circuits used - small box), and I was about to replace and upgrade it at the same time. Upon investigation, there are a total of three 240V two-pole breakers. One 40A is for my electric oven, and there are two 30A breakers. One I have confirmed is for an unused electric dryer outlet (I have a gas dryer). The second I cannot for the life of me work out what it could be for. I've switched it off, and looked at everything I can think of, and everything's working! So two (final!) questions: Since the electric dryer outlet is unused, is it permitted to remove that breaker and 'cap' the wires or something similar, and so free up two slots in the panel? I desperately need the new circuit for a contractor installing a sump-pump (paid for by sellers). What might the other 30A 240V breaker be for?!?! I've checked dishwasher, range hood, gas heater, a/c, refrigerator, garbage, attic fan and now I'm stuck. The previous owner hasn't labelled well - it actually says 'stove'.
