I have a 2 gang plastic box for old work. Im installing a ceiling fan and want to have it on its own switch. do they have shallow boxes or is there a ring i can installed to make it so I can use it. I can't leave it sticking out. I the old plastic light switch box that was there was not has deep. maybe use 2 small boxes?

They make a standard depth and a deep box. It sounds like you bought the wrong box. Is this a 2X2 wall?

I have one 2x2 wall with a switch in it. My solution was to leave the 2x3 old work box in place and put a 2-gang wiremold on top. You just knock out one side of the back on the wiremold box and voila. If you are using a speed control/dimmer combo or something similar, make sure you get a deep enough wiremold box.

Another solution might be to use a 1-1/2" deep 4x4 and an old work adapter. Somebody posted the old work adapter maybe two years ago ... post back if you want to hear more and I'll see if I can dig up the specifics.
