ceiling fan electrical box has 2 14/2 wires coming out, why?
I'm trying to replace a ceiling fan, but I don't understand why there are 2 separate 14/2 wires coming out. One of the wires goes to the switch and the other stays hot unless i kill the circuit breaker. There is only one switch for the ceiling fan. Is this normal? How would I go about wiring the fan?

Sounds like you have a cable with power in and a cable for a switch loop. Was one of the whites spliced to a black?

At the fan:
Hot black to switch cable white
Hot white to fan white
Switch cable black to fan black and fan blue.
At the switch black and white to the switch.
Code note: The switch cable white wire should be recolored on both ends black or red or any color except green or gray. A felt tip marker or colored tape may be used.

If you don't mind, I'd like to know how to wire it both ways out of curiosity. It was wired black to white before so I will wire that way this time as well.
EDIT: I'd like the switch to control the light only and the fan to be hot.

Hot black to switch cable white and fan black
Hot white to fan white
Switch cable black to fan/light blue
At the switch black and white to the switch.
