check ac motor

I have an air compressor electric motor that quit on me. It's a Leeson, 1 hp., 60 hz, motor. It has a capacitior on the top. How do I check it to see if it, a part of it, or the capacitor is bad ? I have a digital, auto-range multimeter.

I have moved your post over from Lihting to Electrical. A better fit for motor questions. While you can do a rough test with a multimeter I 'd suggest just trying a new capacitor.

You can always can get the same size capaitour or larger but Jamais ( Never ) smaller that is the golden rules.

If the numbers is gone or rubbed off you can able stop one of the motour shop and give them the model and seral number and HP rating they will look up the correct size capaitour to fit this motour useage.

And last warning becarefull with capaitors they can hold a whallop of charge it can get ya hard if not heeded.
