THere are several variants of the Hunter. Most are split capacitor induction, meaning there are two motor windings. One winding is "permanently" attached to one side of the line thru a capacitor. The other winding attaches to the line thru either one of two capacitor sections (low, medium), or directly attaches (high speed). The drum switch controls the speed capacitors. THe other side of the windings attach together and go to neutral. There are on line help diagrams that usually just indicate wire colors from the switch and a number; pretty slim help there.

Thanks for your input. Hunter says that all recent fans utilize the same switch. Hunter no longer sells the switch. Instead, you have to return the entire housing that contains the switch and they will replace that for a price. I have been unable to identify a Hunter fan or switch wiring diagram.

THe orange, big box store, sells the Hunter style pull chain switches. There are a couple of variants, mark the old one and bring it with you. The push in style lead connections can be a bit tricky. Pretinning the leads with solder may help.
