2 Pole Breaker Swap

Hello,
Lightning tripped the well pump 2 pole breaker in the house. After I reset it, still no pump power. I measured 120v between each breaker pole (screw) and neutral bus. Then I measured 240v between the poles (screws). So why doesn't pump work--all seems normal. Changing the breaker solved the problem. My question is why was the old breaker not serving properly?? Thanks in advance

The breaker may have not closed the circut completely.

Interesting........does this happen often? Has anyone else seen this problem?

I've heard about it, but I have never seen it in person, but I'm not an electrician, either.

At this point it's just speculation and doesn't matter. I suspect the contacts in the breaker may have been burnt and couldn't maintain the full voltage under the load of the pump when switched on, but that's just a guess. Basically, you had a "Bad Breaker". What's more important is you fixed the problem.
