Need 6v out of a 12v battery

I have this small rechargeable portable fan which uses 6 volts. What I want to do is to somehow use my spare 12v truck battery for this fan. I know that the simplest solution would be to attach something in series with it but I really cannot think of anything right now to hook up to it. So just wondering, is there a simpler soultion? Which does not require hooking another 6v gadget in series?

You need a dc to dc converter. A Google search will bring up many hits under $20.

There is a hack way to do it but may damage the cells in your battery so I won't suggest it.

Welcome to the forums.

Here's an example of a "buck" converter: 12 volt to 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9 volt switching DC/DC converters with 2 amp output car adapter.

Hi ex
What you might consider if you like wiring things together is using a voltage regulator. It is common for a 6 volt regulated supply to have a 12 volt input. There are three lead devices and you just need to select the correct power rating and put it in a package. 12 volts in, 6 volts out and ground.

Here the electronics are simple, but you have to build the box. With the dc to dc it is all done for you.

Here's a nice little DIY page that explains the use of V-regs: 12 to 6 Volt Regulator
