Dimmer switch problem

I am having a problem with two lights both using a dimmer switch. I suppose a dimmer could be bad right out of the box but I wondering about the wiring.

I have a 12/2 wg romex wire run from breaker to junction box. There I use it for a power source for two seperate lights and want a dimmer switch on each. If all common wires are combined in junction box and the power wire is split to each light, is that a problem? One of the switches will not work.

I am not trying to make a 3-way application. I am trying to control each light alone with a dimmer. What am I missing?

Swap the working and non-working switch to see if it's a bad switch.

Make sure you're using regular incandescent lamps, as CFL and other fluorescents will not work with dimmers.

You state you are not trying to do a 3-way but you mention "switches". Please clarify if there are two switches, each controlling one light each.

Except for terminology that is fine. Common refers to a 3-way switch hence the confusion in other replies. What you have is all neutrals tied together. Replace the non working dimmer with a regular switch. That will tell you if it is the dimmer.
