Wiring a generator to a transfer switch

I recently purchased a 4000 watt generator that has two standard 120v receptacles. I would like to wire the generator into a transfer switch, but the plug on the transfer switch is a L14-20R. I can seem to find any type of an adaptor. Can anyone offer any solutions, or do I have to return the generator? Thank you!!

L14-20 is a 240/120 volt receptacle. If your generator has only 120 volt receptacles it is possible that it does not output 240/120. Please tell us the make and model of your generator.

By plug do you mean a L1420P inlet? Is the furnace 120v? If so I'd suggest just make one. A foot of 12-3 SOJ cord, with L14-20R on one end and a 5-15p on the other end. Just leave one hot terminal unused on the Li4-20R to match the unused terminal on the transfer switch. If you have a 240v feed to the furnace this won't work..

The reason you or having trouble finding one is because you have a 240v transfer switch and a 120v supply.

Correct, the plug on the transfer switch is a L14-20. The furnace is 120v. It is the circulation pump for the boiler an a hot water baseboard system.

It is a Buffalo Tools Sportsman GEN4065 4000 watt portable generator

It would be simpler to go with a single pole transfer switch. Did you get a special buy on this one?

Since it is 120v you will have to identify which hot leg is being used and which isn't. All connections must be made only to the hot leg being used. Be sure the neutral goes to the neutral not one of the hot legs. The neutral will be the silver connection or marked W.

A Google search turns up several dozen hits (at least) for that generator but none of them are really useful. It does appear that is a 120 volt ONLY generator so adapting it to your 240/120 volt transfer panel is problematic.

Some articles state it is a diesel engine but most don't state what fuel. Prices seem to be around $300 and for that price I will go on record as stating you're not getting much of a generator, especially if it is a diesel engine.

I also read one review that stated the generator blew up some surge suppressors and was outputting in the neighborhood of 200 volts. That alone would cause me to return the unit and spend a few more dollars and get a name brand.

If you don't want to get rid of the genny despite Furd's post getting the correct transfer panel for a 120v load may be the best option. They are only about $50 and you are going to spend maybe half that building an adapter.
