Duplex switch

When you wire a duplex switch like this:

Is there any sort of "convention" to use?

Let's say as you enter the room you have two lights, one to the left and one to the right.

If you have two switches "side by side" it is logical to wire the left switch to the left light and the right switch to the right light.

If the switches are top/bottom, is there a "convention"? I know there is no hard "rule", but do you all typically wire the top switch to the left device and bottom switch to the right device? Not necessarily lights, but could be two door garage doors, fans etc...

Just a matter of preference.
