switch receptable

Can someone tell me what i am doing wrong I put in a new light switch for outside light ran new wire from switch to panel box and new breaker spliced into the wires to run wire to light fixture but every time i cut switch on breaker trips out.I tried reversing wires but still did the same thing. Thanks for any help

What colors do you have connected at the switch? Sounds like you have the hot and neutral connected. The neutral should be a straight run to the light and the hot should be cut and connected to both sides of the switch.

I have black & white connected at switch Thanks

And thats your problem. Vic nailed it. Blacks to the switch and whites wire nutted together. Grounds connected together and if box is metal pigtailed to both the switch and box. If plastic box just pigtailed to the switch.

Thanks you were right im not an electrician so i would never have figured out what was wrong. Thanks alot

If you want to learn enough to get by on the basics and stay out of major trouble...get a book called Wiring Simplified. It's about $10 and should be available at any Big Box store
