Gfi in new bathroom remodel

I understood that with a remodel, GFI had to be installed in the plugs near the bathroom sink. My contractor told me this. However now he is saying that because my plugs are connected to a circuit breaker in another part of the house, this is not necessary. I am not feeling good about this change of plan.

You contractor is correct that if a receptacle is replaced where the code calls for GFI protection it needs to be installed if the device is replaced.

GFI protection can be provided by either a GFI breaker or receptacle. Do you already have a GFI breaker on that circuit?

The receptacle in the bathroom must be on a dedicated 20A, GFCI protected circut. No other lights or receptacles outside the bathroom are allowed on this circut. The circut is allowed to be shared with other bathrooms.
