On/Off Switch for garbage disposal

Just moved into a house built 1980, California. Switch is located in kitchen which I believe controls garbage disposal.

I went to the box and turned off appropriate switches as well as verify wires are no longer on.

I was looking at switch in the kitchen and was wondering what are the red wires for?

Was there a switch there?

What wires was the switch connected to?

Were the red wires just in the box like that, not connected to anything, and no "caps" (wire nuts) on them?

There was a switch there with previous owner and I'm guessing the wires were cut by
a contractor during the remodel.

You are going to need to determine if this is a multiwire circuit by checking to see if it is controlled by a single pole breaker or double pole breaker. You are going to need to open the garbage disposal Jbox and the dishwasher Jbox to see what is there.

I cracked opened both jboxes. The disposal has one of the red wires. I'm starting to wonder if the other red wire is for the overhead light?

Does the black wire go to the dishwasher?

We need to know if this is on a double breaker (240v breaker). What it could be is that one of the 3-wire cables at the switch is a multiwire which then feeds both the GD and the DW.

It might not be a double pole breaker if both hots did not land on the same yoke.

I got it working.

On the switch, I connected 2 red wires + ground.

On the jbox for garbage disposal, removed the black wire. Switch turns off/on the garbage disposal. Electrical tester checks out ok.
