Multimeter problem

Hello all,
Just got a new multimeter, and when it's on and set on any dc voltage range, there is a always a flashing negative sign next the 0, even when the probes are not connected to the meter.
Is this normal ?

I believe this is normal on some models. To verify that it is working correctly try connecting it to say a 1.5v and 9v battery and see if it reads correctly. Also try reversing polarity, it sounds like yours will indicate negative (reverse) polarity also.
