Outlet tester lights

I was checking an outlet that is controlled by a switch, and the Sperry outlet tester shows all lights illuminated when the switch is off. When the switch is on, the hot/neu reverse scenario is light up.

What needs to be corrected here.

Thanks

Ken

It's really hard to say when you provide so little information, but I can think of a couple of scenarios that could be in play. One is that this may be on a multi-wire branch circuit and you could have a poor neutral connection between this receptacle and the panel. Another is that the switch may be switching the neutral conductor instead of the hot conductor. You need to do further testing with a multi meter checking the voltages of hot to ground and hot to neutral and see what you get. Maybe from that we can tell if there is really a problem becuse there may not be one at all. The all inclusive little outlet testers sometimes give false information.

To further Joe's comments, is this a 3 way switch set up? If so, there is no on or off position.

I think it is an open neutral.
