3-way wiring position

With a 3-way wiring config, with both switches up or down, should the light(s) be on or off?
I realize that there is no right or wrong, but this is new construction and I will do them all the same, so which way is preferred?

There is no right or wrong. The position of the switches will change depending on which switch is used.

I know but wired with the travelers on way, with switches in the same position the lights will be on OR off, and that will not change. Like I said, I know there is no right or wrong. What is the preferred, on OR off if the switches are in the same position?

You are correct, but there has never been a preference stated anywhere I have seen. Since most 3-way switches are not located where anyone can see both at the same time, whichever you select will only be noticeable to you. If you have a preference, you are free to choose.

I was trying to say that both the up and down position can have the light on or off. Both downs can be on and both downs can be off.

I had to draw it out, but in one position of the travelers, both switches up or both switches down the lights will be off, with the "on" condition being the switches in opposite directions.

Reverse the travelers and the "on" occurs when both switches are in the same position and the "off" occurs with the switches in opposite directions.

Not something I have ever seen an electrician worry about.

SOME three-way switches (Leviton Decora line specifically) have TOP embossed on the mounting ear.
