Any issues with square box in ceiling?

I have a very overfilled octagon ceiling fixture box. It used to have a light, but the light has been relocated to a new fan-rated box in the room.

I would like to take this box out and put a plastic or metal square old work box appropriately sized for the number of wires and a blank faceplate. I am assuming there is no issue with this, but I usually think octagonal boxes in the ceiling so I just wanted to double check. Would there be any issues with my plan?

No electrician....but I think you normally see the octagon boxed because thats what fixtures mate with.

You see square ones all the time in exposed places like barns and basements.

Since you're blanking it...I don't think it would be an issue. Make sure you can find a decorative or paintable blanking plate...

Gunguy is correct on all counts

IF you want, you can install a round plastic box (given your cable is Romex) and use a blank cover like this: Miscellaneous Electrical Products | CP3540
