Converting Switched Receptacle to Switch for Recessed Lighting

Hello All,

First post here so I will do my best to get the info posted for an easy answer.

Existing:
An receptacle where top outlet is controlled by a wall switch. 14/3 runs from wall switch to outlet. Red wire is connected to top right screw.

I want to tie into this line in the attic and make wall switch control newly installed recessed lighting. I would also like to make the receptacle FULL HOT.

Do I cut the 14/3 wires and wire nut each of them back together and add the new wires as follows... black-red, white-white, bare-bare.. Then replace receptacle with new one with tab not removed?

Any help is great!

Cameron

Are there other wires in the switch box? How are they connected? Besides the red, what other colors are connected to the switch? Ignore the green or bare for this.

At the wall switch:
3gang box, there are (2) 14/3 coming into box at top. one goes to ceiling fan/light the other 14/3 goes to the switched outlet. They are all pigtailed off a "hot" blk/wht/bare wire coming into bottom of box.

At the receptacle.
bare-green, white connects above bare, black on bottom of opposite side and red above that.

There are no other colors

At the receptacle you can just replace the receptacle and connect it to the black only. Cap the red. Do not break the tab on the brass side. The receptacle is now hot all the time.

Are you adding the recessed in addition to the ceiling fan?
