Pool pump and timer wiring

I am replacing a toggle switch for a pool pump and timer. Each side has a black and red wire w one green ground. I bought a pass and seymour double pole 20 amp switch. I reconnected the old one with this one and reconnected the wires as they were. When i turned the electric back on the circuit tripped immediately. The circuit for the timer and pump are 15 amp each. Do I have the worng switch? Did I connect wrong wires (red to black and black to red)? Is there a way for me to figure out. The old switch was rusted and old, I do not know if the new switch is compatible. Any suggestions? Thought it was siumple enough

Your new
pass and seymour double pole 20 amp switch
should have come with a wiring diagram. Often they are printed on the box. Use that to determine which terminal to connect each wire to.

Some two pole switches are fed top line, and bottom load. Others are side to side. Look for a diagram, as Nashkat posted, on the box or go to the manufactures web site to find a diagram.
