New wire or splice for cooktop

I'm replacing my range with a separate cooktop/oven unit. The wiring for the existing range is on the floor. The new wiring needs to be up the wall about 4 feet from its current location.

Do I need to run a completely new wire from the breaker box to the new location or can I use a junction box (under the house) and make a connection there to extend the existing cable. This is a 40 amp circuit.

Thanks,
Rut

It would depend on whether the old wiring was a 3 or 4 wire circuit. A 3 wire circuit should not be altered.
