exterior timer wiring for a in ground pool

I want to hook up a timer to my son's pool pump. He had a timer that just plugged into an exterior outlet and had a place to plug in the pool pump cord. Worked OK for awhile and then died. I wanted to attach a more substantial timer and saw some at the local big box stores, but all where hard wired versions. The question I have is, can I use a heavy duty exterior extension cord, cut the two ends off and wire them to the inside of the timer, so I now have a timer that I can use to plug into an outlet and plug the pump motor into.
Thanks for the info.

No you can't. You could hardwire the timer to control the receptacle for the pool pump.
