running underground coduit as opposed to uf cable

i am thinking of running underground metal conduit for my outdoor outlets and lighting. i know 125volt 20 amp or less must be 12 inches deep for uf cable but how deep should conduit be? i want to run conduit sice i may want to run future lines so i will not have to re dig. can underground conduit have regular stranded wires?

If you mean EMT it would be better to use PVC.

Only if protected by a GFCI. Otherwise minimum depth is 24"

can underground conduit have regular stranded wires?
I don't have a clue what "regular stranded wires" are but normally single conductors such as THWN are used. Either stranded or solid are available in smaller sizes. Stranded is easier to pull.

You can not use EMT in the ground, you must use rigid. I agree with Ray, PVC all the way! PVC can be buried 12" if GFCI protected and 20 amps or less, otherwise it needs to be down 18". I suggest lat least running 3/4" PVC.

I would definately go with 18"-24" deep, even with GFCI protection. It'll be a bit more work, but you (or a future home owner) will be less likely to hit it if you dig around it. Nothing worse then hitting the pipe with a shovel (or something else) and have to go through and replace it all.

Also, if you are thinking you might run more lines through later, Maybe run a slightly larger pipe and leave yourself a pull string (something plastic coated as to not rot).
