No power on selected outlets

I have a series of standard electrical outlets (5) with no power located on the top floor of an older second story home. Lights and switches are working. Outlets are located near each other in adjacent rooms (2 bedrms, hallway, and bathroom). None of the outlets have an obvious reset switch on the outside of the outlet. None are on an outside wall and there appears to be nothing wrong with the circuit breaker.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot the problem.

Look everywhere for a GFCI outlet with a reset button on it. You could have any number of these in your home. First look on your front and back porch, in all bathrooms, in the kitchen, basement and garage. If this fails, look along every inch of every wall in your house, including closets. Don't forget behind furniture and appliances and cabinets in your garage. Also look along the entire permiter of the outside of your house. Make this a very thorough search, not just a cursory look around.

Then shut off (press hard) and back on all 15 and 20 amp breakers (do you have breakers or fuses?), even if they don't look tripped.

If these easy things fail, the work gets a lot harder. At this point, buy a multimeter or call an electrician.

After you try these things, post back. With more information, we can help more.

John is right on target. A single tripped GFCI can cause the exact problem you describe.
