A/C motor runs slow then smokes

As luck would have it. In the middle of painting my compressor quit running. It tripped the circuit breaker. I flipped the breaker and it started running for about 2-3 minute then started smoking. I unpluged it and haven't tried it again. I know very little about electric motors. Any suggestions on where to start.

If it's a separate motor like a belt drive, prob better to just replace the motor and capacitor. Depending on the size...you could probably replace both for $75 or so.

Could be anything from winding insulation breaking down to bearings going bad. Is it a burnt electrical smell or a burnt oil/metal smell?

Residential air conditioning compressors typically are hermetic and have no internal serviceable parts. If what you say is true and the compressor smoked, it needs to be replaced. IF what smoked was the condenser fan motor, follow Gunguy's advice.

OR.......were you painting your compressor?

I'm with Vic. I think it is an air compressor other wise the whole paint dialog was a non sequitur.
