Wiring a track light without junction box?

I'm going to be installing a track light soon in a room that does not have a junction box in the ceiling. I have an outlet that's controlled by a regular switch which I'll be changing to a dimmer as well.

Here's my question. Without the junction box, can I install the track light by running the wire through the ceiling, down behind the wall and hard wiring it to the outlet? I would remove the plugs and then put a blank outlet cover so it can't used with plugs.

Welcome to the forums!

That depends on whether the live end of your track light is rated to be used as a junction box. Many are. What product are you planning to install?

...hard wiring it to the outlet?
Why do you want to go to the outlet (I'm guessing you mean a receptacle mounted + 16" above the floor) rather than to the switch?

Note: Removing the receptacle from that location may create a code violation relative to required receptacle spacing.

You can't dim a receptacle, so rethink that. Remove the power to the receptacle and pull it from the wall. Tell us the configuration of the wires attached to it. Or better yet, post a pic of the receptacle. There's ways to do what you want, but better than what you are describing. http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...your-post.html
