Carter wiring comment

I discovered recently at a relatives home where many of the light switches were wired where the nuetral is used in place of the hot. When the circuit is in the off position it still shows 50 volts. I assume somewhere in time something was jerry rigged thru the years. SO the only way to correct is completely redo the home wiring intirely? Thanks

Way back in the day, is was allowed to switch the neutral instead of the hot. This has not been allowed for quite some time. It was either done wrong or is a old installation.

How old is the house/wiring? Is it knob and tube? If so, likely the best option is to rewire the house.

There's the key, it's K&T wiring (knob & tube). K&T wiring frequently had the neutral conductors switched. I have also seen instances where there would be no box for light switches; they were simply screwed to the wood lath. That house needs a full rewiring.
