I have an existing 60 amp circuit that we are updating due to a new air conditioner unit. I have two #6 and #10 (ground). Is a four wire circuit required now in the Los Angeles area? Can a use a #8 for the neutral wire?

You might want to check you name plate rating. Minimum conductor size.

I suspect the wire you have will do fine and still remain within the NEC requirements.

Most A/C units do not use 120 volt within these A/C appliances. Therefore no neutral [white] wire would be needed.

Just two hots and one green of bare for equipment grounding.

Hope this helps
