Generator overload protection?

I have a whole house generator that does a nice job taking care of most items but I have noticed that it labors when some heaters and the hot tub turn on. My neighbor mentioned some type of auto sensing device that would uncouple the spa during power out episodes, is this something I should consider?

Load sheddding is something that will allow a generator to be smaller while still serving your house. Heavy loads will be turned off when capacity to start other things is needed.

How do I learn more to see if it's something I should consider?
