Welder wiring

I am trying to wire a dedicated circuit for my welder:

POWER MIGŪ 180C MIG Welder

I have been told I need to run 8/2 to a 3 Prong Plug. (NEMA Type 6-50P). 2 hot and 1 ground to a 40 amp breaker.

I would just like to run that by everyone here in case they see a potential problem with this setup?? Also, I have some 8/3 cable already - can I just use that and if so, should I use the extra wire as a ground as well or something or just cut it?

Thanks!

What is the input amps? Neither your link or a couple others I checked give that. NEMA 6-50p is for a 50 amp circuit but you are talking about installing a 40 amp circuit.

It may be okay because of a low duty cycle but that is beyond my knowledge.

Then you plan sounds good. If you use the 8-3 just cap the white at each end. You can not use it as an extra ground.
