Replacing ceiling fan boxes on stucco patio ceiling

Hi Everyone,

My patio had two ugly ceiling fans that shook whenever they were on. Figuring the wrong boxes were used, I pulled both fans and confirmed my suspicions. Both boxes are plastic Slater-brand boxes that say "For Fixture Support". There's no model number and no mention of a fan so I'm assuming they're not suitable for ceiling fan.

That being said, I want to install the correct boxes but I don't want to make a massive job out of this. The ceiling is stucco on metal lath and there is very little ceiling access above the boxes.

Can anyone recommend a good, metal, ceiling fan box that can be screwed to the SIDE of a truss from below and mount flush with the finished stucco surface?

Thanks,

- Joe

How far is it from the side of the existing boxes to the joists? Even if they are side-mounted to the framing, you should be able to replace them with boxes mounted on braces and wind up with an area to patch that's small enough to be covered by the fan canopy.

That's what I was referring to earlier. Ones made by Westinghouse are commonly available in the big box stores:
