tandem breakers

I guess a tandem breaker isnt really diiferent than a double pole because it picks up juice from 2 different points on the bussbar. That makes it a series type of connect I suppose.
Are they generally used for smaller 240 loads ??? or is it just convenient to be able to use it for any circuits later on if your needs change???

A pair of tandem breakers installed in the space for one full-height breaker can only supply two 120V circuits. They are connected to the same leg of the 240V single-phase service.

In order for a breaker to supply a 240V load, each half of the two-pole breaker is fed from a separate leg of the service.
