tool to drill joist holes and hole size

It looks like I have to drill many holes to lay those #12 romex cables through rooms.
Can you guys recommend any drill bit for this purpose? something like this:6 Pieces Wood Boring Bit Set-DW1587 at The Home Depot ?
impact drill or regular drill?
good hole size for 3 #12 romex cables, 1", 7/8" or 3/4"?

Regular drill for drilling in wood.

I like my Greenlee Naileater. Its lifetime warranty is just one reason. The flatter drilling angle and comfortable working clearance from the framing are a couple of others.

I drill one 7/8" hole for every two cables. Third cable? Second hole. Centered front-to-back on a stud, top-to-bottom on a joist.

Are you saying 2 cables one hole because of the code or because of the hole size? I remember somebody said 3 cables together in one hole is allowed.

I grew up using a brace and bit. You haven't lived till you have done that in an attic in August with the brace set to ratchet because you can't get a full swing. Ahhh the good old days.

Those spade bits will take forever. Just pick up a short 7/8" auger bit. It'll bore through a stud in about 5 seconds. The Naileater is definitely professional grade but there are other brands that are less expensive.

Drill

Rent one of these. You may like it well enough to buy it. Not promoting HD. It is what came up when I Googled "right angle drill".

3 cables in one hole may be allowed - IDK. I don't care for it for a number of reasons, including ease of pulling, minimizing kinking and reducing heat buildup.
