breaker for kitchen and bedroom lights keeps kicking

We returned from dinner and noticed lights in kitchen and bedroom would not turn on. Went to breaker box flipped breaker for the lights, did not want to kick on on first try. switched breaker on and so far so good. originally in bedroom celing fan was on a 3 switch to control all functions of fan, was put onto a single switch it has to be turned off and on several times before light wil turn on. wondering if fan is surging or switch is bad? was just informed that when wife returned earlier today the lights were not working either and no lights were left on thanks for any light you may be able to help me with this problem

If you had a hard time getting the breaker to stay on and it did not trip immediately after resetting it ...... it may be a breaker going bad.

Is this a standard breaker ?
Not a GFI or Arc fault breaker? (breakers with reset buttons on them)

What brand is the electric panel ?

Was the fan switch in the canopy replaced or was this a wall switch?
