Drill through header?

In the photo below, you'll see the header/support I need to drill through, top to bottom, for two 12/2 cables. The inspector mentioned 1/2 inch holes.. Should I use two 1/2 inch holes, one per cable, or should I use a single 3/4 inch hole for both?

My fear of using a larger hole is undermining the support/structure. There is a 1/2 hole in another location for a single 12/2 cable right through the middle of the beam.

Thoughts? This is a new area for me...

A couple of holes will not damage the structural integrity of a triple header. You are OK with either 2 - 1/2" holes or 1- 3/4".

You can do a 3/4" hole in the middle board toward one end of the bay would cause absolutely no structural problems. Any reason this isn't a 2x6 wall instead of 2x4? Curious.

Are you planning to drill horizontally or vertically?

It will be a vertical hole, probably right through the middle beam. Bottom to top to run cable into the joist spaces. Sounds like a 3/4 hole should do the trick.

Blame the previous owner for 2x4s... The wall section was added after the fact, although the original wall appears to be 2x4 as well. The primary support comes from two very large wood posts evenly spaced along the span. And of course, the foundation on both sides.

Thank you everyone.

I guess you'll have to fur-out the 2x4's to match the 2x6 header if you're finishing off that area to a finished wall on this side of the pics..!..- perhaps..?!?r
