light switch

My house was built in 1950.Last Saturday my hall light quit working.I replaced the bulbs but did not work.I next replaced the switch, still no good. My son checked for the presence of current and found that both wires coming to the light switch were "hot". Is this normal and if not,how do I check it and/or fix it?

What type of tester did your son use to test for voltage?

I recommend a photo to show the pros exactly what you have. Show the connections at the switch box and at the fixture.

If the switch was "on" when the wires were tested it is normal for both wires to be hot. They are connected after all.
