wire size in electrical hot water tank junction box

Went to hook up the electrical wiring for this hot water heater:

GE 80 Gal. Tall 12 Year 5500 Watt Double Element 240 Volt Electric Water Heater-SE80T12TAH at The Home Depot

The wiring that is in the junction box for the hot water heater is 12 awg? How can this be ok? Shouldnt it be 10 awg? The hot water heater is 5500w which is 23 amps? 12 awg is not rated that high.

No, it is not rated that high. You need #10.

That basically means Rheem put the wrong size wire on the tank?? This isnt the wire going from the panel to the heater, its the wire attached directly to the heater.

No. You need 10 AWG wire for the 30A circuit from the panel to the water heater. That's what Ray was referring to.

The wiring used in appliances is made differently and controlled by different standards than the wire used to wire a house. Rheem almost certainly got it exactly right.
