Doorbell/Transformer?

How do you know if its the transformer or the doorbell that needs to be replaced? When I moved into this home, wires were not connected. When I touched the wires, the doorbell chimed, but has not worked when pressing the doorbell.

What do you mean when you say When I touched the wires? The wires should be connected together when the button at the door is pushed, to complete the circuit.

If the button has failed in the closed position, the doorbell will chime if you touch the wires to the transformer. I think you need a new button.
