12-3 wire with 6 wires

I was in home depot and looked inside the insulation and saw 6 wires. What are the 6 wires for? Can I hook both grounds to the same grounding post? Thank you, john

12-3 has four wires if you count the ground. Are you sure this wasn't communication or control cable?

Got me. The 3 in XX-3 is the count of current-carrying conductors: 2 hots & 1 neutral in standard electrical cables.

You've seen this cable. We haven't. What type is it? What color was each of the wires? What information did you get from the associate in the electrical department?

Can I hook both grounds to the same grounding post?
Sure, but why pay for the extra copper(?) and then waste it?

Maybe I am missing something here. 12-3 wg, NMB in every roll I have bought has two hots, one neutral and one ground. Let's see, 2+1+1=4. Had to get the grandkids to help on that one

I agree with Larry. A total of four wires.

A flexible cable like SO cord in 12-3 would only have 3 conductors.

We really need to know the cable type in question.

It would have had to been 12-4 or 12-2-2.

Big orange sells a 250' roll of what they call 12-2-2, which also has 5 conductors. Instead of a blue, it has a white with red stripe.

Interesting stuff. Looks like 4 conductors and 5 wires, if we don't call the ground a conductor. That doesn't gibe with "Can I hook both grounds to the same grounding post?" Hmmmm.

Maybe it's something like this??: HCF MCAP Type MC All Purpose Hospital Care Facility, which says "Multiple neutral and multi-circuit cables totaling more than 4 current-carrying conductors are now possible." I don't remember seeing HCF at Big Orange before, but I guess it could happen.
