Repositioning or removing outlet boxes

Hello!

My room had 1" thick hickory boards covering the sheetrock. Removing the boards left the outlet boxes sticking out too far. The outlet boxes each look like they have 2 horizontal nails extending across them. I thought that I'd remove the boxes and replace them with ones that grapple from the back side of the sheetrock.

Other than brute force, is there a trick for removing the outlet boxes without destroying the sheetrock?

Thanks,
D

Sawsall with a metal-cutting blade between the box and the stud. No Sawsall? Use a hacksaw blade in a holder that leaves the end free.
